Old World Wine Vs New World Wine
The Old world is European & Arabic countries that first started making a beautiful beverage named wine from grapes, The New world is all the countries that Europeans colonized, Australia, USA, Argentina, Chile, South Africa and many more.
In Australia we like to think that Europe gave us wine so we could make it better. The question with wine is the question to so much of what is good & bad in this world, Tradition or Modernisation.
Most old world wine are sold as being from a region example Italian Chianti or a French Bordeaux, the region will normally have its standard grape varieties and its standards on all levels of production for the wine growing region. So if for instance I am drinking a Spanish Rioja although the quality will change from wine to wine, the style will not.
In the new world wines are sold based on the grapes used in the wine, ie a Shiraz, Chardonnay although some Old World wines now promote the grapes they use on their labels to keep pace with the changing needs of today’s wine customers. Very few new world regions have standards on how wines are made. So a Merlot from 2 different wineries in the same region can taste very different.
Another big change lead by American wineries is genetically engineered grapes, aimed largely at making house wines taste better. These grapes can be sweeter, dryer, can have higher yields for cheaper prices, I am not a fan of genetically engineered grapes but it is the world we live in.
Old world wines normally also have regional standards of aging so the product is sold at a premium drinking age. Most New World Red Wines are sold well before they are ready for drinking, there is a Myth many Sommeliers like to spread that New World wines don’t age as well as Old World wines, this is a Myth as I have aged many Australian wines over the years.
Having in recent years spent a lot of time in India it scares me that I can drink a Shiraz bottled in the same year. One of the most common brand Grovers would actually be a really nice wine if they just aged it for a couple of years.
The biggest difference between Old World and New World is the image. Old world sells itself on History, Tradition, Mysticism and Romance. New World is simple this is what you get its Practical, Approachable and Modern.
This world is big enough for Old World & New World wines, both make some Horrible wines, both make some exceptional wines.
