Everyone knows that mixologists and cocktail historians are passionate about their tools and collectibles. Come view some of the most interesting specimens at this symposium on Shakers & Barware hosted by author and collector Jim Walker at the Museum of the American Cocktail along with noted collector Mark Biggler, Michael Silvers of Uber Bar Tools, Greg Boehm of Mudpuddle Books. You'll learn about their rich history while enjoying some delicious cocktails from Dale DeGroff. Jim will demonstrate some of the more eccentric makers and their products including spoons, strainers, shakers, corkscrews, bottle openers, soda siphons, and glassware. Jill DeGroff will be there to autograph copies of her book too! The talks will be accompanied by various pieces of bar ware from numerous collections, patents from the 1880's, the prohibition era, and even some modern ones. Learn about the mixologists who used these items and how they improved upon many of them. You'll come away with a new appreciation for the role that bar ware has played and continues to play in the evolution of the cocktail. Hey, we will also be raffling off a $Grand$ or so in bar ware... for more information click The Julep Story from 1488 to Present 15:30 - 17:00 Saturday, 24 July 2010, Tales of the Cocktail, Grand Ballroom North, The Royal Sonesta Hotel Most historians will tell you the Mint Julep was born in the American south in the early 1800s. But Mixellany's spirits historians Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown have traced the Julep back as far as the 1400s, and found some outstanding Mint Julep recipes from the 1700s, hailing from London, Edinburgh, and Dublin that feature some amazing "lost" ingredients. There is no question, as Irvin S. Cobb states in his "Recipe Book", that the Mint Julep evolved in the United States. What's surprising is that the Julep was simplified to create the modern drink we know today. Tickets are $40 advance and $45 at the door. In the 1920s the art of cocktail making spread to Cuba and to Europe with American barmen exporting their know-how, leading to the birth of several classic cocktails. The golden age of cocktails appeared in France during the Roaring Twenties (‘les Années Folles’) with the Sidecar and the Alexander in particular. These two cocktails were part of the list given to the participants at the 2010 International Cognac Summit, marking the 90th anniversary of Prohibition. Other cocktails included the Mint Julep, Cognac Sour, Cognac Collins, Stinger, Mojito n°3 and the Blue Blazer. We are searching the UK for the most creative molecular cocktails. (We realise this is a bit of an ambiguous term, but we want people who are using unusual or new techniques to create experiential drinks to apply). The more imagination used, the better! How to enter: Creative bartenders should come up with an original concept – their vision for the drink, and a simplified method (this doesn’t have to include a recipe) of how they will create the drink. The deadline for entering the London Heat is the 31st May. The 10 most creative concepts will go through to the next round, where they will be asked to create 2 molecular cocktails to present at the live heats. These competitors will be sent a Molecular Mixology kit (containing agar, sodium alginate, calcium lactate, methyl cellulose, xanthan gum) and should use at least one of the ingredients from this kit in one of their drinks. The only other rule is that one of the drinks must contain El Dorado Rum, but this can be the same drink as the one containing the MM kit products, thereby leaving the second drink to be as creative as the imagination will allow! The first heat of this competition will be held on the 15th June at Wax Jambu on Upper Street from 7pm and there will be additional heats in Scotland (in October) and the North (in August). Please send your entries for the competition to Matt on competition@molecularmixology.co.uk by the 31st May 2010.
